These are my reflections on what I’ve learned and what I can do better next year. I’m confident I will be adding to this as summer moves into fall and more vegetables are ready for harvesting!

Little events like these are reminders of how wonderful life is and how much there is to appreciate in the world.

I’m confident I will figure out the bug thing as I continue my gardening adventure perhaps a little more seasoned and a little less naïve as I go.

I am reminded of the importance of slowing down, don’t skip any steps and take the time to nourish the roots! Plants are much like people in that regard I think!

For me the joy of gardening and growing things is the connectivity to nature. There is something about having my hands in the earth, the warmth of the sun on my person and hearing nature around me that brings me joy.

Given our society is hard wired for immediate results I’ve always struggled to be a patient person.

Bringing home the bees …. At one point my back was covered with bees!

The joy of seeing greenery on the property, something other than weeds, has also been good for my soul, a real breath of life!

Andy and I built our first Hoop House during our Spring Break ‘staycation’!

Water is very important to the farming and ag community here in Palisade. Colorado as well as numerous other states rely on the Colorado river for its primary water source. With that in mind, when we were looking at different properties, we always made sure the property had water rights tied to the specific acreage.

Now that the irrigation, fencing, and paths are in, it is so amazing to see what I drew on graph paper turn into reality!

I’ve spent the last few months working on the property, demoing old structures, and weeding, a lot of weeding! As spring approaches, I took advantage of a warm day and did some gardening instead! It was a glorious reminder of why I’m doing all the clean-up work around the property.

I jokingly tell people that I learn everything the hard way, truth be told…. I’m not joking! I seriously learn everything the hard way, including how to properly create compost!

Over the last couple of weeks, I have attended different conferences and forums on horticulture, and soil and water conservation as it relates to farming. It’s been a crash course on learning how to take care of our land and grow things.

Finally, after months of not creating anything, I was ready to build Compost Bins for the farm! This has been something I’ve been wanting to do for some time.

Weeding on a farm is like nothing I’ve ever encountered before! When we purchased the property, the seller had let the weeds go on both the North and South sides of the property. By the time we moved in, they were so high on the North portion of the farm you could no longer see the Pole Barn!
